Safe

What is the purpose of the SAFE card scheme?

By introducing the SAFE campaign and card scheme, it is envisaged that young people will have improved access to sexual health information and free condoms. It is anticipated that the provision of condoms and supporting material in a simple, safe and confidential way will lead to increased awareness about sexual health risks and the implications of unplanned pregnancies.

The scheme will be targeted in key areas in the south of the borough where public health research shows pregnancy and sexual health rates are highest among young people.

Young people can register for the SAFE Card whether they are sexually active or not. The scheme can help prepare young people for safer sex and/or help them in exploring their sexuality. The scheme is not about promoting sex to young people, but it is about acknowledging the fact that young people, some under the age of 16, do have sex, and therefore have a real need for accurate sexual health information and services such as condoms in a safe and confidential environment.
